baptism

Baptism, Dream Interpretation

New force entering your life, cleansing away old attitudes; opening to one’s inner possibilities; life pervading and healing, an influx of what had been latent or potential in the self, birth. See religion and dreams; Christ under archetypes.

Symbolic of becoming fully immersed or initiated into something, Matt. 28:16-20. Watching someone attempt to baptize themselves is symbolic of trying to work for or earn salvation

A sacrament identifying a believer with the death, burial, and resurrection of jesus christ

Baptism is symbolic of many things: initiation, death and rebirth, regeneration and renewal.

A rite of passage, baptism can signify acceptance by a group of people with specific knowledge.

The method of baptism in the dream is also significant: water suggests cleansing, fire purification and air or wind renewal of the spirit.

Psychological / emotional perspective: When a ceremony or ritual signifies new beginnings, our way of thought needs to change in line with what we now know to be true. We can ascribe to a common belief.

Material aspects: To dream of being baptised indicates a new influence entering our lives, cleansing away old attitudes and opening up to many inner possibilities.

To dream of baptising someone means you are ready to pass on knowledge to other people.

To dream of a baby being baptized indicates rebirth and a rejuvenated view and hope of life. Being enveloped in water symbolizes death, but rising from water symbolizes rebirth and newness. Your previous self that was bound by negativity is gone and this new life you’ve chosen will find prosperity. Spiritually, this dream indicates a rejuvenated faith in God and you are reaching a spiritual actualization.

Symbol: Baptism means the beginning of new life.

Vision: If you are holding a baby who is to be baptized: you are asked to accept a responsibility and you need to agree to it. You can now start a very important project. Being present at a baptism: you have a sudden desire to start a new life. Watching a baptism: you will find inner strength in a very difficult hour.

Depth Psychology: You are going through profound changes: you are more tolerant, gain new insights, cleanse your emotions, and awaken secret strengths—all of which is like getting a new lease on life.

A wonderful dream symbol.

Deliverance, rebirth, official opening. See Bath, Spring.

Baptism represents renewal and a new way of being, a new attitude toward life and other people.

If you dream of being baptised, you have let go of your old negative self and the new you will likely be successful.

If you are a religious person, this dream may represent your renewed faith in God and that you are coming closer to spiritual fulfillment.

This foretells disappointment through unforeseen circumstances.

1. A form of cleansing, as often emotional as spiritual.

2. A new project is in the beginning stages (to attend a baptism).

3. To dedicate or narrow one’s way of thinking.

Dreams of a baptism symbolize rebirth, awakening and that you are recognizing your sacredness. See Water and Infant.

1- To dream of being baptised indicates a new influence entering the dreamer’s life, cleansing away old attitudes and opening up to one’s inner possibilities.

To dream of baptising someone means the dreamer is ready to pass on knowledge to other people.

2- There is the possibility that the dreamer may be having religious beliefs forced on him in some way, often for the greater good.

3- Baptism is symbolic of many things initiation, death and rebirth, regeneration, renewal.

The basic link of all these is the feeling of optimism that it brings.

To dream of baptism, signifies that your character needs strengthening by the practice of temperance in advocating your opinions to the disparagement of your friends.

To dream that you are an applicant, signifies that you will humiliate your inward self for public favor.

To dream that you see John the Baptist baptizing Christ in the Jordan, denotes that you will have a desperate mental struggle between yielding yourself to labor in meagre capacity for the sustenance of others, or follow desires which might lead you into wealth and exclusiveness.

To see the Holy Ghost descending on Christ, is significant of resignation to duty and abnegation of self.

If you are being baptized with the Holy Ghost and fire, means that you will be thrown into a state of terror over being discovered in some lustful engagement.

The rite of baptism, either by sprinkling or total immerision, is a portent of your trying an experiment that will cause you considerable trouble before it succeeds.

Example: ‘It was like an English church with several great spires.

The whole building seemed to be built in a white and gold design.

The gold pans shimmered in the sun. I gazed at this wonderful sight for some time and felt such a wonderful feeling of upliftment, my tiredness gone’ (Johan E). As in the example, the powerfully regenerative side of our inner life or feelings; the world of experience we have created inwardly by our thoughts, meditation, actions; our sense of contact with life itself. Also the moral rules we make decisions from (such rules may not be ‘Christian’ if they kill much of our inner life); moral authority, our relationship with the community. Occasionally baptism, marriage, death, the mother or refuge.

Walking past church: not entering into contact with the best in us—or our anger towards dogma. Example: The priest was going to question and assault my friend in connection with some opinion he had offended the church with. I went to stand near him to give him moral suppon, and physical help if necessary. I hated seeing anybody degraded.

The priest saw my move and sent three thug type men to shoulder me out. They surrounded me to knock me down. I went beserk and knocked them all over the place with kicks and punches’ (John P). In the example John sees the dogmas of the Church as an assault and degradation of human qualities of love and moral suppon. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

In attempting to put together the information gathered from viewing thousands of dreams—not simply at face value, but explored in depth through the emotions and direct associations of the dreamer—a philosophy or view of life arises. It suggests that our birth as a physical and psychological being is a paradox. We are unique, and at the same time a common undifferentiated person. Psychologically we have our identity out of the lives of thousands of humans who preceded us and left the gift of language, of music, an, of concepts and information. Our mental life, our consciousness, is in some very real way formed out of what they left from their life. Our consciousness has been hewn out of the rock of possibilities by the love, the struggle and pain, the endeavour and wit of their lives. Particularly our psyche has been shaped by or modelled on our parents, and the traces in their life, unknown though they may be, of their parents, backwards for many generations.

Our identity is given to us by the humans who raise us. This sense of self arises because we are treated as if we were a self. This, with language, is the creative matrix of our self awareness.

The giving of a name is therefore a miracle which acts as a nucleus around which the many mental connections can be made which form our self image. Perhaps this is why giving the name in baptism is seen as a holy rite in Christianity.

Our conscious personality can live without ever becoming aware of its connections with other lives except as it meets them in everyday affairs. That its existence has depended upon what was given by countless other lives—that humans constantly create each other, consciously and unconsciously, through the dynamic flux of communication—might never be realised. That one’s own life is also a part of this creative process, this sea of living consciousness, might never be known. Nevertheless, each individual life constantly takes pan in the collective, negatively or positively. This is not a mystical thing, but is plainly observable. From the point of view of dreams, if our life has given nothing in deed, in love, in rearing of children, in ideas or art, or in common humanity, we are dead—during life and afterwards. Giving and receiving, kinship and symbiosis, growth and decay are the fundamentals of the living process according to dreams.

At death, we face a very real end, a real death. There is no magical escape from this. All that we have been, all we have become, all we gathered and won is lost—finished. But the paradox occurs again. Dreams suggest that out of all we gave of ourself, out of all we received from the being of others, we are recreated in a realm of consciousness. This may mean that we continue as living influences in the lives of those who still live. But the suggestion is that something more than this occurs. ... A Guide to Dreams and Sleep Experiences

Dreaming of a pool deals with our need for the understanding of our own emotions and inner feelings.

A pool in a wood, for instance, would suggest the ability to understand our own need for peace and tranquillity.

An urban swimming pool might signify our need for structure in our relationships with other people, whereas a pool in the road would suggest an emotional problem to be got through before carrying out our plans.

In order to understand ourselves we may need to explore the pool by totally immersing ourselves in it, that is, to become involved in our own emotions. How we deal with what arises (in more senses than one) will teach us a lot about ourselves.

The pool may suggest a form of cleansing, particularly of old traumas and emotions or of past misdeeds.

The most potent image of that is baptism by immersion.

3- There is a meditation or guided imagery technique which can enhance one’s ability to dream. First, you picture yourselves walking in a field. Feel the grass beneath your feet and the wind on your face. Walk towards a slight dip in the ground which is to your left. At the bottom of this dip there is a pool which is surrounded by trees. Sit quietly by the pool, simply thinking about your life. When you are ready, stand up and walk into the pool very slowly. Feci the water rising slowly up your body until you are immersed completely. At that point let go of all the tensions of the everyday world and concentrate on the peace which is within. Then slowly emerge from the pool, and again sit quietly beside it. When you arc ready, walk back to the point in the field where you started, and let the image fade. By practising this, gradually it will be found that the dream images take on a deeper meaning.... 1- Dreaming of wading puts us in the position of recognising what our emotions can do to us.

If we are impeded by the water (see Water), then we need to appreciate how our emotions can prevent us from moving forward.

If we are enjoying our wading experience, then we may expect our conncction with life to bring contentment. Sometimes the depths to which our bodies are immersed can give us information as to how we copc with external circumstances.

2- Often the feeling associated with wading can be more relevant than the action of wading itself.

For instance, to recognise that we arc not actually in water for example, we are wading through treacle can give us a clue to how we feel about ourselves or our circumstances.

See River, Sea, Ocean. This dream symbol can be interpreted on five different levels:

(1) on the sexual level

(2) on an emotional level where your own emotions are perceived as undifferentiated and flowing

(3) as a fear of flooding, being drowned by the unconscious

(4) as a feeling of going with the flow

(5) as a feeling that life is chaotic.

This symbol is also the desire for a totally new orientation.

In alchemy, water is connected to feelings; it represents the wild nature of the soul in need of being conquered. Water is the place where the souls of the dead meet the spirits of the water; it is a place of repression, of secrets with unknown depths and an element of rapture. It can tear us away and sweep us off, and it can be very frightening. Water is the symbol of what is changeable. Diving into the water means to seek wisdom. Whoever looks into the water always sees the Self.

Water symbolizes women, the process of birth and pregnancy. Running water means experiencing sexuality in a positive sense. Standing water means losing vitality and your very center. Or it might mean, as in Pond and the fountain of youth, that water is the carrier of life’s energies and rejuvenation. Out of this understanding might have come the ritual of baptism.

Falling into the water means being swept away by emotion; hut this may also he a warning dream, pointing also to Diving and Drowning.

According to the Chinese understanding of nature, water is a symbol of the elemental, female force of yin.

For the Taoist, water is the essence of life, its movement an example for a life lived in harmony with nature.

The holy water in the Catholic Church and the water used for baptism represent the healing powers of water.

According to Freud, a water dream is often the memory of our life in our mother’s womb. And again, according to Freud, to come out of water represents the image of birth. Water for him was always connected to birth. See Baptism, Swimming, Bath, Diving, Tears, Drinking, Birth (rebirth).... Little Giant Encyclopedia

1- Water is usually taken in dreams to symbolise all that is emotional and feminine. It is a mvstcrious substance, given that it has the ability to (low through, over and round objects. It has the quality of being able to wear away anything which gets in its way. Water can also stand for the dreamer’s potential and his ability to create a new life in response to his own inner urgings.

2- Water also represents cleansing, being able to wash away the contamination that we may experience in everyday life. In baptism, water is a cleanser of previously held ‘sins’, often also those inherited from the family. Entering water suggests beginning something new. Deep water signifies either being out of depth, or entering our own subconscious.

3- Spiritual rebirth The Life-force.

Water appears so often in dreams as an image, with so many different meanings, that it is possible only to suggest sonic probable ones. Thus, being immersed in water can suggest pregnancy and birth. Flowing water signifies peace and comfort, while rushing water can indicate passion. Deep water suggests the unconscious, while shallow water represents a lack of essential energy. Going down into water indicates a need to renew one’s strength, to go back to the beginning, while coming up out of the water suggests a fresh start.

To be on the water (as in a boat) can represent indecision or a lack of emotional commitment, while to be in the water but not moving can suggest inertia. Other images associated with water are:

Bathing suggests purification.

Canals svmbolise the birth process.

Dams, islands and other obstacles are conscious attempts to control the force of the water, and therefore our emotions. Diving represents going down into the unconscious, or perhaps trying to find the parts of ourselves which we have suppressed. Drowning highlights our ability to push things into the unconscious only to have them emerge as a force which can overcome us. Floods represent the chaotic side of us, which is usually uncontrollable. This side requires attention when it wells up and threatens to overwhelm us.

Fountains suggest womanhood, and particularly the Great Mother (see Introduction).

Lake

A lake, like a pool, can signify a stage of transition between the conscious and the spiritual Self. When come upon unexpectedly it can give us the opportunity to appreciate and understand ourselves.

To be reflected in a pool indicates the dreamer needs to conic to terms with the Shadow (see Introduction). We must learn to acccpt that there will be a part of ourselves that we do not like very much but, when harnessed, it can give much energy for change. Rivers or streams always represent the dreamer’s life and the way that he is living it. It will depend on the dreamer’s attitude as to whether he see his life as a large river or a small stream.

If the river is rushing by we may feel that life is moving loo quickly for us.

If we can sec the sea as well as the river, we may be aware that a great change must occur or that attention musl be paid to the unconscious within.

If the river is very deep we should perhaps be paying attention to the rest of the world, and how we relate to it. Crossing a river indicates great changes.

If the river causes fear we are perhaps creating an unnecessary difficulty for ourselves.

If the water in the river appears to be contaminated we are not doing the best we can for ourselves.

Sea or ocean The sea very often represents cosmic consciousness, that is, the original chaotic state from which all life emerges. Inherent in that state is all knowledge i.e. completedness, although that may be obscured by our fear of the depths. We do not fear that which we understand.

A shallow sea suggests superficial emotion.

The waves in the sea represent emotion and lust.

A calm sea suggests a peaceful existence, while a stormy sea signifies passion, either negative or positive.

Changing tides: Among the Teutonic people, each tide carried different meanings that may apply to your dream.

The tide occurring just before sunup is one of introspection, while the one at dawn bears fertile waves. Noon tides speak of tenacity, dusk tides bring transformation, the night tide edifies, and the one occurring at midnight heals.

An ocean: The earth’s womb and beginnings of all humankind. Also representative of the vast subconscious, superconscious, or Jungian Collective Unconscious (see Abyss).

Among Native Americans, water appearing in dreams indicates your spiritual state.

For example, if the water is flowing smoothly, your spirit is calm and moving in a natural direction.

Moving water: Hie seen and unseen ebb and flow of all energies.

Baptism: New life, forgiveness toward yourself, and renewed purity’ of thought and actions (see Baby).

Bathing: Getting rid of your figurative “dirt” like old habits, guilt, anger, and even sexual repression (e.g., feeling “dirty”).

Hot water: Trouble s afoot, so look for the wellhead (see Temperature).

Drowning in water: Overwhelming circumstances, problems, or emotions that threaten to defeat your efforts or sense of individuality. Esoterically, this may also reflect a memory from a past life experience (see Choking, Suffocation).

Floating upon: Dependence on your feminine nature or a mother figure. Alternatively, skimming the surface of spiritual potentialities without ever really diving in and experiencing that aspect of self.

Stagnant water: Something, often a situation, that is unhealthy for you to the point where it causes a standstill in personal growth and in your quest for wholeness.

Shallow water represents a similarly frivolous personality that avoids delving into any aspect of life too deeply. Alternatively, this can represent a fear of confronting the depths of your own suhconscious.

Tidal waves: Powerful emotions or instincts that you have let build up to a critical mass. This dream reveals the need to express those things before they come crashing over the floodgates.

Surfing on water: Taking control of, and accepting the power in, the feminine aspects of self and the Universe. Also maintaining a rather haphazard balance between the intuitive nature (the water) and the conscious self (the surfer).

A geyser: A sudden, unanticipated outpouring of creativity, goodness, inspiration, spiritual gifts, or whatever.

Wearing a life preserver in the water represents getting a second chance at something. Grab it before it gets away!

Ripples appearing on the water’s surface indicate the waves of energy we send out without even knowing it, similar to a web. This will eventually touch everything and everyone because you are part of the network of life.

Lakes: As the abode of several magical creatures, including the Lady of the Lake and water nymphs, dream lakes reflect the search for the wonders that lie just beyond the surface of reality. What does the surface of the lake cover? Are you fishing here, thereby trying to catch a little magic?... The Language of Dreams

The Way of Dreams and Visions

General Meaning: The force that brings about the washing in our lives.

The Word of God and the anointing are both depicted by Water in the Scriptures.

• Positive: Being washed with water speaks of being cleansed and of putting things behind you. It also speaks of being cleansed from your sin.

• Water is a picture of the anointing. John 4:14 Water is also a picture of the Word of God, and how it sets us free from the dirt in our lives.

• Ephesians 5:26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the [rhema] word, • To water something means to nurture it and to give it life.

If you are in ministry, then it means that you should be watering the seeds that have been planted in the hearts of God’s people.

• This is primarily a teaching function, just as Apollos functioned in.

• 1 Corinthians 3:61 have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.

Negative:

Water that is bitter or dirty speaks of a contamination, likely stemming from bitterness.

• It speaks of those that really do have a ministry, but unfortunately are in deception. They have allowed some things in their life that are not of the Lord.

• To dream of being in unclean water speaks of the things you are getting involved in.

• Instead of walking in the spirit, by getting involved with these things or feeding on things that are not of God, you are contaminating your spirit.

• It could also indicate that the ministry you have been receiving is not pure and directly from the Lord. Some of it is tainted with the flesh and man’s ideas.

• When I train God’s leaders I share how the Lord takes them through training to get rid of their own ideas.

• The revelation and the anointing that God gives is pure when it comes from your spirit. However if your mind is filled with things of the world or your own ideas, you end up tainting that word. Then what comes out is only a part Christ, and the rest is your own ideas!
