One who lives in solitude, i.E.
A religious devotee
A holy man, or the wise old man, will often appear in dreams as the hermit, suggesting that we are discovering the dimension in ourselves which has a spiritual awareness.
Psychological / emotional perspective: There are two types of hermit: one withdraws from life in order to live an entirely spiritual existence and knows that others will care for his bodily needs, whereas the other travels throughout the world using his knowledge and expertise to help others.
Material aspects: There is a kind of loneliness and singularity within many people, which prevents us from making relationships on a one-to-one basis. This may manifest in dreams as the figure of the hermit.
Gives gender - specific: In a woman’s dream the hermit may represent one of her links with the divine in the same way as a priest does. In a man’s dream the hermit will often highlight his own links with his god, whatever form that takes.
Vision: Seeing a hermit in tattered clothes: bad news in the near future; your efforts are fruitless. Seeing one hermit means you are looking for advice.
If you are the hermit: you have lost faith in vour fellow men and would like to withdraw. Living with your partner in an isolated place: your relationship needs a major overhaul—in some cases, only a separation will do.
Depth Psychology: A hermit often symbolizes a wise counselor; sometimes it means you have lost faith in a person or in humanity and that you would like to “get away from it all.” Are you feeling lonely right now? Do you need peace and quiet, to find a place where you can think about the world, yourself, and your life? See Guru.
Recluse; danger of losing contact with other people. Self-realization, purification, internalization, fleeing from the world; or self-determination and autonomy.
To dream that you are a hermit, represents your need to be alone or that you are feeling alone. You are withdrawing from daily life and distancing yourself from others.
1. To hide oneself or an aspect of self away.
2. A desire or need to withdraw from the fray for a while; time alone.
3. Fear or shyness about trying something new, taking risks.
4. Serenity and peace can come from self-knowledge and quiet contemplation.
Dreams of a hermit symbolize your need to take time for yourself. Or if you’ve been in isolation, playing it safe, and avoiding intimacy for too long, this dream could be showing you that it is time to come out and be part of the living and take a risk.
The hermit also can symbolize that you are in a period of self reflection where you are reevaluating all that you’ve learned and are trying to find a sense of inner peace. See Island and Cave.
