At certain stages of development, we can become aware that we are powerless without a spiritually motivating force behind us. We are like puppets in the greater scheme of things.

Psychological / emotional perspective: When a puppet appears in a dream there is perhaps a sense of being able to manipulate circumstances or people around us.

A puppet can also represent the more mechanical processes of our being, those activities that go on automatically in the background.

Material aspects: If someone else is working the puppet, we may feel that we are being manipulated. It would be wise to look at how we are co-operating in everyday life in becoming a victim.

If the puppet is manipulating us we have become aware that bureaucracy is causing us difficulty. What should be working for us has, in fact, turned into some kind of manipulation.

Depth Psychology: Puppets usually represent dependence—on other people, substances, sex, etc. Sometimes they indicate the negative influences and control that you feel others have over you. Do you feel like a marionette? Are you known to pull “strings” to manipulate others? In either case, you need to make some changes! See Thread.

Numb, childish, dependent, insensitive (a child projecting its psyche on the puppet). It is important to look at how these symbols are connected. They may point to a rediscovery of childlike emotions, or to the necessity to say good-bye to them.

If you are the puppet, you see yourself as without a soul, as only a pretty plaything.

Until the late Middle Ages, the puppet was considered a defense against evil ghosts or as possessing magical powers. Such beliefs are still mirrored in the practice of having mascots.

If you dream of puppets, you are worried about being controlled by outside influences - or repressed fears - which are preventing your progress or enjoyment in life.

See Mask.

Dreams of a puppet denote that you’ve been abdicating your power, or that you have been abusing it.

If you are feeling powerless, manipulated or used, then this dream is a message to cut the strings that bind you and take the authority for your life back.
